Education minister Isabel Celaa accused of not practising what she preaches

SPAIN’S Education minister Isabel Celaa left Madrid and flew to Bilbao last Friday, the same day that the city went into lockdown.

Several Spanish newspapers commented on the technically-vetoed journey, after photographs of Celaa that were taken on the plane surfaced on the social media.

Education Ministry sources explained that Celaa had initially flown to Bilbao, where she lives, on October 9, intending to attend an event in Pamplona with the central government’s Interior minister, Fernando Grande Marlaska, the next day.

This was suspended but although she was unwell during the night, Celaa decided to attend the Cabinet meeting that approved the State of Alarm for Madrid.

On her doctor’s recommendation Celaa left Madrid immediately after the meeting for a consultation that afternoon and, as Education Ministry sources later pointed out, a medical appointment is one of the valid exceptions for leaving a locked-down area.
