POLICE have arrested a suspected migrant trafficker operating between Algeria and Mallorca.
National police officers acting in collaboration with the Balearic Guardia Civil Maritime Service detained the 22-year old skipper of a small boat which reached Mallorca on September 12 with 15 Algerians on board.
They had reportedly run into problems making the crossing and had been at sea for more than 45 hours by the time the Maritime Service picked them up.
Investigators believe the young man is a member of one of the most active people trafficking organisations working the route between northern Algeria and the Balearic Islands.
In the last few weeks 12 small boats carrying more than 250 migrants which set out from Dellys on the Algerian coast have made it to Mallorca.
According to police each migrant would have paid between €600 and €1,000 to secure their places on the dinghies.
Police have charged the 22-year old with assisting illegal immigration.
