Stray cats are set to be sterilised in Torrevieja after an alarming number of them have been appearing throughout various municipalities of the province of Alicante.

THE Alicante Provincial Council has approved a €12,094.10 grant to the Torrevieja City Council for sterilisation treatments of cats without an owner.
According to the Councillor for Animal Protection, Concha Sala, approximately 185 cats, half male and half female, will be sterilised.
It is an alarming number but these actions will hopefully help to control further outbreaks.
Once all the necessary means are coordinated, sterilisation treatments will be carried out, in collaboration with veterinary clinics.
The mayor has indicated that this action will try to alleviate the massive increase in the birth of cats that has occurred.
Concha Sala stated, “castration is the only way we [can] reduce the number of cats […] on the streets of the city.”
She was also convinced that “with the help of associations involved in this same purpose we will be able to control these colonies so that all residents can live together in harmony.”
