Armed police trap customers inside Hull pub after ‘gunshots heard.’
Gunshots heard
AROUND 20 customers were prevented from leaving the pub in Anlaby Road, Hull, as ‘loads’ of armed police officers closed off the surrounding area and roads after gunshots were heard by local residents. The Lair on Anlaby Road pub was surrounded by armed police officers and roads were blocked off due to an unknown ‘incident.’
Witnesses in the area had reported hearing “gunshots” and “a few loud bangs,” at around 9pm. However, police are yet to confirm this and we are waiting for a statement from them. A staff member from the pub has confirmed that no staff or customers were allowed to leave the pub. Armed Police Seige at Pub in Hull
“Customers went to have a look at what was going on outside the front and police shouted at them, ‘Get in, get in. Get away from the windows’,” said the worker. The armed police siege in Hull on Tuesday night was apparently triggered by “cracking noises” which a member of the public believed “could be shots fired from a building,” police have said.
Witnesses had reported hearing “gunshots” during the incident. Several people living in flats in and around Cambridge Street said officers were preventing people from entering or leaving the blocks of flats. Whatever it was, it was considered serious enough to contain the entire premises for hours.
A member of staff at The Lair said customers had seen officers outside and had gone to take a look, before being told to “get in” and keep away from the windows. As of 11.30pm, the road had reopened and the police cordon has been withdrawn. Armed police teams were seen leaving the area a few hours later. There was speculation of a ‘supposed gangland shoot-off’ but this cannot be confirmed as yet.
On Twitter, a spokesperson for Humberside Police said: “Anlaby Road in Hull is currently closed between Ferensway and Park Street as police are dealing with an ongoing incident. “We ask people to please avoid the area to assist us in bringing the incident to a safe conclusion.”
An update by police is expected later today.
