The COVID mystery of Gibraltar has confused some and angered others as it sees low coronavirus cases with relatively relaxed restrictions.

Although Gibraltar only has a population of 33,000 people, it has still managed to keep its volume of cases low compared to neighbouring Spain with only 334 confirmed infections and no deaths at this time. It’s record daily number of cases has only reached 20 people.

The strange and mysterious part of the Gibraltar situation is that it neighbours Spain, with its coronavirus cases surging to the highest in Europe. With regular travel by expats to and from Gibraltar to Spain it is curious that they do not share a similar rate of spread.

In Spain the number of cases has soured with record days of confirmed cases regularly topping 10,000 per day.

Furthermore, the situation of a second wave in Gibraltar has been relatively minimal with its highest rebound day only clocking 12 infections.

Despite the difference in their population and landmass, the infections per 100,000 residents is still comparatively lower than that of their neighbours in Gibraltar.

As yet, analysis’s are at a loss as to the situation in Gibraltar compared to other countries across Europe. Gibraltar has implemented much more relaxed conditions than its counterparts and the use of masks is only mandatory in public areas that are covered however are not required in open air environments, whereas in Spain they are required as standard in all public spaces.

Recommendations for over-70s, who are considered to be more vulnerable, are that they stay from home as much as possible and restrict interaction with the younger population unless absolutely necessary.

To allow this to happen the government instigated a program to ensure that the necessary access to delivery services, etc, were appropriately available.

The situation in Gibraltar has angered local Spaniards who cannot understand how such relaxed restrictions have garnered such positive results. They are now beginning to question the draconian measures that have been implemented in Spain.
