THE Department of Social Welfare of the Rincón de la Victoria Town Hall together with the Association of Relatives and Patients with Alzheimer’s Bezmiliana (ASALBEZ) have asked on Monday, September 21, on the occasion of the celebration of World Alzheimer’s Day, for the implementation of an Early Plan of Alzheimer’s Prevention among people who have suffered from Covid.
From the ACE-Barcelona Alzheimer Treatment & Research Centre Foundation and the Andalucian Neurology Research Network itself, they have assured that people who survive Covid are at high risk of later developing neurological pathologies and, in particular, the disease Alzheimer’s.
As councillor Elena Aguilar explains, based on the studies that are being carried out, the risk of suffering a neurological problem can come from both a direct viral infection of the nervous system and responses secondary immune and inflammatory.
The systemic inflammation that many affected by Covid have presented is directly related to the appearance of cases of cognitive deterioration, and, therefore, a greater risk of suffering from Alzheimer’s in the future, in addition, most of those affected have been people greater.
In addition, both the councillor and the president of ASALBEZ, María Jesús Román, have also claimed in today’s manifesto that prevention measures be taken to extremes in vulnerable people such as Alzheimer’s patients. “We know that Covid-19 infection is more serious in vulnerable people, and Alzheimer’s patients are, therefore, we ask for greater control for them,” explains Román.
Likewise, Elena Aguilar, has taken the opportunity “to recognise the extraordinary work carried out by the ASALBEZ association, adapting to the complex situation, adapting its programs and directing all its efforts to implement protection measures that minimize the chances of contagion”.
The councillor maintains a direct collaboration with the ASALBEZ Association, through its president and members of the group to establish and develop joint lines of work to improve the service and quality of life of its users and their families.
For its part, the Plenary of the Rincón de la Victoria Town Hall in July unanimously approved the institutional proposal of the Social Welfare Area in collaboration with ASALBEZ to accelerate the implementation of the National Plan for Alzheimer’s and other dementias 2019-2023 to seek a rapid response to the implementation of this Plan that allows greater coverage to be given to people affected by dementia in general, and Alzheimer’s disease in particular, which have come to be considered a major health problem ”.
According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 35 million people in the world suffer from some type of dementia. Alzheimer’s disease is the leading cause of dementia (up to 70 per cent) in developed countries.
