What’s in a name
THE Partido Popular, in opposition on Villajoyosa council, criticised the decision to change the town’s official name to La Vila Joiosa.
The proposal was approved at the last plenary council meeting by the PSOE-Compromis-Gent per La Vila coalition that controls the local government.
Ciudadanos and the PP, with 10 councillors between them, voted against the motion which the PP’s spokesman, Jaime Lloret described as “a betrayal of the wishes of many PSOE voters.”
Although Lloret to mention this, it is ironic that local Spanish and Valenciano-speaking residents habitually refer to Villajoyosa as La Vila.
Last week’s was the second attempt to drop the Spanish name, as in 2017 Gent per La Vila councillor Pedro Alemany voted against the proposal, changing his mind three years later.
Lloret has now declared that the PP was not going to admit defeat, maintaining that a great amount of red tape would have to be untangled before the Consell, the regional government’s Cabinet, could approve the change of name.
