A BUSY Gandia shopping area’s residents are opposing plans to install a mosque in a local building.
The Comunidad Islamica la Comunicacion association has asked Gandia’s city hall if the ground floor of a property it hopes to acquire is suitable for conversion into a mosque.
According to the local Spanish media, two residents claiming to speak for the majority of their neighbours, declared in a written statement that they do not oppose the centre, “let alone the people who wish to use the building for religious purposes.”
Their objections were based on the already busy and noisy neighbourhood with “three large supermarkets, bars, restaurant and shops” where it was impossible to park.
“All this prompts us to ask ourselves if it is the most adequate location for a centre visited by many people, independently of the activity carried out or the religion of those using it, who have all our respect,” the spokespeople said.
They added that they did not believe that the premises were suitable for the planned activity: “That is why we have asked city hall for more information,” the statement said.
