Costa del Sol’s police have arrested the hit and run driver who allegedly killed the well-known cyclist and athlete on Malaga’s motorway yesterday.

TOP cyclist Mario Zumaquero was killed in the early hours of yesterday morning at around 6.60am on the A-7 motorway, in the direction of Cadiz, as reported.

Thanks to huge social media response to help find the driver who allegedly fled from the scene after the fatal collision, Local Police were able to track the driver down to a nearby neighbourhood. The suspect’s car – a grey Mercedes with obvious damage – has also been taken away by the forensic team as evidence.

The tragic accident of the popular 44-year-old local athlete has shocked residents of Marbella, as well as nearby Ojén – towns that the cyclist had strong links to.

The Marbella Sports Delegation have conveyed their condolences to Zumaquero’s family, reaassuring them that they will “continue to demand greater safety for cyclists. It’s a sad day for Ojén and for sport,” added Ojén’s mayor, José Antonio Gómez.
