Racers rumbled in Velez-Malaga as illegal motor races continue in Spain’s Axarquia region

POLICIA Local intervened and broke up a crowd of almost a hundred drivers in the vicinity of Avenida Juan Carlos I, which connects Vélez-Málaga with Torre del Mar, after it became a makeshift race track last Friday night.

Officers were dispatched in several crews to the area, after receiving numerous calls, alerting that illegal races between cars and motorcycles were taking place.

After managing to split up those gathered, a motorcyclist, was arrested, accused of an alleged crime against traffic safety. In addition, various sanctions were filed against other drivers. The Councillor for Seguridad Ciudadana, Chema Domínguez, explained, in a statement, that they are going to strengthen surveillance in this area at night, as well as in others where complaints have also been received for illegal races.

In addition, he pointed out that they will also increase controls in the Torre del Mar area, where last Saturday night there were large crowds of young people on the seafront, without respecting security measures against coronavirus. “I appeal to the responsibility of parents and young people, we are in a pandemic situation and here it seems that they are acting as if nothing had happened,” he said.
