Firemen Commandeer Kayaks and Pedal Boat to Rescue Diver on the Costa Brava

WHEN a report was received by the volunteer fire brigade in Tossa de Mar that a diver was in difficulty and needed assistance, no proper rescue boat was immediately available.

The diver could only be reached by sea and the firemen decided that his health was more important than their dignity so they borrowed two kayaks and a tourist pedal boat to get to him.

Happily, they were able to offer basic medical assistance until a rescue boat arrived at which time he was transferred via the pedal boat and then taken by emergency services to a medical centre for treatment.

The local fire brigade union has criticised the lack of facilities and equipment currently available.
