CLUBBING in Balearic party island Ibiza and Brit favourite holiday destination Magaluf in Mallorca could be out until a Covid-19 vaccine is found.

In what came as a mighty blow to hopes of reviving the Balearics’ vibrant nightlife scene as soon as possible, the regional government indicated it would not allow most nightlife venues, like clubs, discos and music bars to open their doors for the rest of this year, and potentially into 2021, or until such time as there is an available vaccine or an effective treatment for the virus.

The ABONE nightlife venue association president Jesus Sanchez said it was regional Tourism Minister Iago Negueruela who him what the administration’s thinking was on the issue.

Negueruela reportedly confirmed the archipelago government’s view to Spanish press, saying he believed it would be difficult for venues with dance floors to open while coronavirus remained a risk to public health. In the best possible scenario they could open, but dancing would be out, he said.

There would also be strict health safety controls and shorter opening hours.

Club and disco owners are now pushing for the go-ahead for a 10-day pilot scheme to run from next June 21 to the end of the month to test out their safety protocols.

They propose measures like limiting capacity to a third, prohibiting dancing and putting tables and chairs on dance floors to prevent any temptations to boogie, enforcing social distancing and getting the contact details of everyone who comes through the door so they could be traced should anyone later develop symptoms of Covid-19.

The nightlife venue owners want to see the sector beginning to start up again in July in the ‘new normality’, with higher limits on clubber numbers and dancing allowed once again.
