HAIL in inland Medio Vinalopo has damaged the area’s principal crop of dessert grapes. Worst-affected were early varieties Aspe, Monforte del Cid and Novelda where growers reported losses of between 30 per cent and 40 per cent. In contrast, Agost has also seen losses to this year’s grape harvest although this was due to rabbits eating the young shoots. “The year 2019 has seen one of the worst plagues for years,” the Asaja agricultural union told the local Spanish media, attributing the huge number to the lockdown period during the State of Alarm when hunting was banned.
