HUNDREDS of jellyfish were washed up recently on Moraira’s El Portet beach.
The bank of jellyfish, brought to the shore by the recent spell of heavy seas, discouraged beachgoers who preferred not to venture further on the carpeted sand.
Belonging to the Pelagia noctiluca species – otherwise known as mauve stingers – their tentacles produce painful stings whose effects are occasionally long-lasting but not usually dangerous.
Jellyfish are frequently seen on Marina Alta beaches in June owing to sea currents and prevailing winds, but experience shows that this does not imply that they will continue to arrive throughout the summer, experts said.
