UK Expat Shoppers Get Ready to Splash the Cash in Positive Reopening News from Spain’s Costa Blanca South

UK expat shoppers in Spain’s Costa Blanca South area are getting ready to splash the cash after getting some positive reopening news.

Eleven popular markets across the Orihuela municipality, including the Orihuela Costa, will reopen over the next few days, after being shut down since mid-March due to Spain’s State of Alarm emergency lockdown.

Orihuela went into Phase 1 of the isolation reduction this week, and the municipality’s markets councillor, Victor Bernabéu said: “This has been a complicated job to get everything reopened, but it has been worth it to get this important part of the local economy going again, whilst guaranteeing the health and safety of our citizens.”

New layouts have been drawn up guaranteeing that traders keep to social distancing rules in relation to their customers as well as plenty of distance between the stalls.

Orihuela Council has acted on the advice of the Ministry of Health, and new fencing will be erected at each site.

In addition, private security staff will patrol each market along with a Local Police officer.

Chemical toilets will also be installed and over 700 gel bottles have been bought which customers must take advantage of when they enter a market area.

Before and after the market day, a thorough disinfection of the site will be done before the stalls are erected.

The market trading hours will be between 9.00am and 2.00pm, and under the Phase 1 rules, traders can only sell food and ‘essential’ items.

The first reopening will be this Friday’s market on Paseo Calvo Sotelo in Orihuela City, with the Playa Flamenca market staged the following day, as well as the Avenida de la Vega site in Orihuela.

Sunday will see the return of at the markets at La Murada and La Aparecida, with all of the regular Orihuela markets operating on their traditional days.

Torrevieja is now the only major centre in the Vega Baja region which has yet to decide on market reopening.
