UK Holidaymakers Essential as Tourist Industry in Costa Blanca and Spain Needs Post-Lockdown Plan

THE Costa Blanca’s top political figure has said that the area’s crucial tourist industry needs a major rejuvenation plan to encourage UK holidaymakers to return once the lockdown ends.

The call came from the Valencian President, Ximo Puig, who has asked the national government in Madrid to back measures to support key economic areas in the region, which includes tourism.

Puig’s plea came after a video-conference with his regional counterparts around the country and Spain’s Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez,

“Tourism is vitally important for our area and we also need to get people in the hospitality industry back to work as soon as possible,” said Puig.

“It is absolutely fundamental to have a national plan for tourism as well as getting one single European standard that will guarantee the safety of holidaymakers once international tourism resumes,” he added.

The Valencian leader talked about the fact that the region will be ready next week to join Phase 1 of the national de-escalation from the State of Alarm, which will see bars and restaurants able to reopen their terraces at a reduced capacity.

Puig stated that new coronavirus cases across the area were less than a third of the national average, and that the death toll was half the national figure.

Those statistics are even lower as a percentage in areas of the southern Costa Blanca like the Orihuela and Torrevieja health departments where new cases have come to a virtual standstill.

President Puig also thanked everybody for their efforts and patience during the crisis:

“Everything that has been achieved in the Valencian Community has been thanks to our people, who have lived up to the historic moment.

“The regional government has had the best team that anybody could have ever dreamed of, with five million residents working in the health service, residences, or other essential jobs. That’s in addition to volunteers who have made face masks as well as every single person that has played their part in following the isolation rules to stop the spread of the virus.”

Puig finished: “We must make sure that the needy citizens are not left behind and we must boost our economy.”
