RABBITS are gorging on young shoots from the vines that produce Teulada-Moraira’s prizewinning muscatel wine.
After receiving numerous complaints from the Municipal Agricultural Committee and the Muscatel Growers’ Association, the town has asked the regional government’s permission to hunt and shoot the rabbits.
With all non-essential activity halted during the nationwide lockdown to combat the coronavirus pandemic, the rabbits have the countryside to themselves and are putting this year’s grape harvest at risk.
Grape growing and wine production still make a significant contribution to the local economy and Agriculture and Fisheries councillor Alejandro Llobell explained that he has applied to the Generalitat for permission to eliminate the rabbits before they cause irreversible damage to the vines.
