Sophie Gregoire Trudeau was “feeling well” but would remain in isolation, a statement from Mr. Trudeau’s office said.

Canadian PM Justin Trudeau and his wife are self-isolating after she tested positive for coronavirus

The Prime Minister will not be tested for Covid-19 despite his wife’s diagnosis because he has shown no symptoms, it added. But they will both remain in isolation for a planned period of 14 days.

“The Prime Minister is in good health with no symptoms. As a precautionary measure and following the advice of doctors, he will be in isolation for a planned period of 14 days,” the statement from his office read.

Sophie started showing symptoms of the virus shortly after returning from the WE Day UK Charity event and concert last Tuesday, March 3.

The 44-year-old PM’s wife later released a statement of her own thanking people for their support. She wrote: “Although I’m experiencing uncomfortable symptoms of the virus, I will be back on my feet soon.”

Canada has 145 confirmed cases, a three-fold increase on last week, and one death — an elderly nursing home resident in British Columbia. Seven of the country’s 10 provinces have recorded infections.

On Thursday the province of Ontario, Canada’s most populous, announced it was closing all schools until 5 April. Quebec Premier Francois Legault asked all people returning from travel abroad to self-isolate for 14 days. The measure will be mandatory for all government employees.

Trudeau has since spoken to Boris Johnson over the phone to discuss the response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Also at the event were celebs including Idris Elba, Jamie Oliver and Lewis Hamilton.
