CALLS have been made to change the name of a Torrevieja road that honours the famous Spanish opera singer, Placido Domingo, following his admission of inappropriate sexual behaviour against women. The Green Party group on Torrevieja Council have tabled a motion calling for the authority to remove Domingo ́s name from the street in the Urb.Jardin area of the city. That follows 18 months of allegations against the tenor which culminated in a statement where Domingo apologised for his actions. He said that he accepted responsibility for his behaviour after an investigator hired by The American Guild of Musical Artists confirmed that he acted inappropriately in the workplace.
At least 20 women have come forward with accusations that Domingo was involved in sexual harassment over three decades starting in the late 1980s. Domingo, 79, initially disputed the allegations when they first came to light, but the fresh evidence forced his hand into having to admit his guilt. Many cultural venues around the world, including Valencia ́s Palau de les Arts opera house have broken ties with the singer, and are to remove his name from their music school. Now Torrevieja ́s Green Party says that the city must change the name of Calle Placido Domingo in an important gesture.
“This public area cannot continue to bear the name of a man who has been denounced by more than 20 women for sexual harassment,” they said in a statement. The Greens are suggesting that the road be renamed after a woman that has some kind of relevance to Torrevieja.
