93-year-old woman attacked as she slept by burglars who raided her home

Masked burglars broke into an elderly woman’s home as she slept and attacked her, leaving her with purple bruising under her eye.

One of them put his hand over the woman’s mouth to stop her crying out as the other searched the home in Liverpool just after 2.25am today.

The woman, 93, was taken to hospital suffering from shock and with injuries to her face.

The city’s chief constable slammed “no grass culture nonsense” and demanded information on the “scum” responsible for attacking a 93-year-old woman as she slept.

‘This is a 93 year old woman in her own house who should be afforded respect and dignity. Someone knows who did this.’

Andy Cooke also shared the appeal to Twitter as detectives investigated the despicable crime that took place inside the pensioners home.

The force also took the unusual step of releasing a photo of injuries sustained by the victim when a masked man clamped his hand over her mouth, to stop her speaking, as she lay in bed.

After ransacking her home, the men left with a quantity of cash.

Police said an investigation is underway and house-to-house, forensic and CCTV enquiries are being carried out.

Detective Sergeant Richie Shillito said: “Everyone has the right to feel safe and secure in their own homes and this was a particularly cowardly and despicable incident involving an elderly lady who was left badly shaken and with visible injuries.

“I know that members of the public will be shocked by what has taken place and I would appeal for their help in finding out who is responsible and bringing them to justice.
