DIOGENES SYNDROME: Characterised by extreme self-neglect and domestic squalor (File photograph)

AN ELDERLY Diogenes Syndrome sufferer was found to have over 60 dogs at her home in Hondón de las Nieves. Diogenes is a disorder characterised by self-neglect and the compulsive hoarding of rubbish and animals. Local animal groups, including Asociacion Alma-Hondón, along with a vet and the local police, went to the woman ́s house after concerns about the state of the home and the high number of dogs that lived there. A variety of adult dogs, some of whom were pregnant, were discovered along with puppies. Many of the dogs were described as “being scared” but otherwise they were healthy considering the circumstances that they were in. The homeowner ́s condition was apparently known to neighbours, but authorities did not act until animal charities chose to intervene. A specialist team went in to clear the house, but no further details were given about the owner.
