WOMEN’S WEEK begins in Alfaz, Friday, February 28, although events continue until March 17 in the Costa Blanca town.
“This is an across-department initiative in line with the L’Alfas +Igualitaria project that promotes gender equality,” Equality councillor Rocio Guijarro said. The Youth, Culture, Heritage, Environment, Education and Other Nationalities departments have produced a programme for all ages, genders and nationalities, the councillor explained. These include an Escape Room session, plays, exhibitions, literature, gastronomy, music and excursions: “We want everybody to be involved and to take part,” Guijarro said. Events begin  Friday, with the inauguration of the Memorables, Insignes e Intrepidas 1870-1931 (Memorable, Famous and Intrepid) exhibition in the Les Escoles Velles cultural centre at 7.30pm. This relates the little-known stories of a group of Spanish women who fought for freedom, women’s rights and justice, Guijarro said. The Escape Rooms session, The Woman in Time, open to members of the public aged 10 or over will be held between 5pm and 10pm at the Casa de Cultura. Sunday, March 1, sees “Sierra Helada women: lighthouse-keepers, miners, smallholders and fishers” a conducted tour of the Albir Lighthouse’s informal museum. This sets out from the Lighthouse car park at 10.30am. The Culture department has arranged an excursion on March 6 to Musica por la Igualdad concert in Benidorm, performed by 65 women musicians from the Benidorm Conservatoire and women members of three local brass bands and conducted by Irene Isabel Garcia Esteban. A bus leaves the Casa de Cultura at 5pm and seats should be reserved at the town hall’s Equality department or by emailing igualdad@lalfas.com before March 2.
