PANCAKES- Delicious!
Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday is a day which moves around, depending on when Easter lands that year! It immediately precedes Ash Wednesday (the first day of Lent), which is celebrated in some countries by consuming pancakes. It was traditional in many societies to eat pancakes or other foods made with the butter, eggs and fat that would be given up during the Lenten season. The word shrove comes from the English word shrive, which means to obtain absolution for one’s sins by way of Confession and doing penance. It is also known as Mardi Gras (French for fat Tuesday), and in some places is known as a carnival day. ‘Carnival’ derives from Medieval Latin carnelevamen (“the putting away of flesh”) adding another aspect of the Lenten fast, to abstain from eating meat. It is often celebrated with street processions or fancy dress.
