A total of 743,713 passengers passed through the Alicante-Elche Airport during the past month of January, which represents a decrease of 5.3% compared to January 2019. According to Aena, this decrease “reflects the incidence that it had on the airport operation the closure to 24-hour air traffic, on the occasion of the fire of the terminal cover on January 15 and the subsequent closure from 1:00 p.m. on the 19th until 05:00 on the 21st, by effects of the storm Gloria, which joined the poor state of the facilities. ”
The incidents suffered on the Costa Blanca in January caused 492 flights to be cancelled, of which 421 were rescheduled at the Murcia International Airport and the Valencia Airport. Alicante airport managed a total of 5,409 flights in January, which represents a 10% drop compared to the previous year. The countries with the highest demand for travellers during the month of January were the United Kingdom, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany.
On the contrary, the Valencia Airport increased the number of passengers by 3.2% compared to the month of January of the previous year. Thus, this airport welcomed 561,235 passengers in January.
