Three young girls invent straw to detect date rape drugs.

The three girls who are trying to fight date rape drugs, have created a straw to use as their weapon. Date rape is a problem worldwide, however these girls came up with a simple straw that may help prevent crime.

The straw was first created in an entrepreneurship class they all attended, and in 2017 they decided to enter their product into the Miami Herald’s Business Plan Challenge and won first place.

The straw works by having two separate test strips, that when placed into a drink, will turn light blue if it detects some substances frequently used for sexual abuse. The smart straw can identify the most popular forms of drugs used of date rape, including Ketamine, roofs and GHB.

Although smart straws are a great invention, it shouldn’t replace the necessary precautions: Don’t accept drinks from strangers. Make sure to open sealed containers yourself or watch the bartender make your drinks. Always keep your eyes on your drink.
