Sóller Tunnel in Spain's Mallorca set for month of restrictions

The Sóller Tunnel in Spain’s Mallorca will operate with traffic restrictions during the night for a month due to planned improvement works being carried out to optimise its safety.
The restrictions will come into force on Wednesday, February 19 with the tunnel being closed between 11pm and 6am, excluding Fridays and Saturdays.
The main work that will be undertaken is the replacement of brackets that hold the pipe that supplies the fire hydrant system. Here, 1,100 new supports will be installed which will be fixed directly to the wall and integrated into the pipe.
As reported by the Department of Mobility and Infrastructure, improvements had to be made to ensure the safety of the tunnel where its existing support could lead to drivers being injured in the event that a collision occurs inside.
The Consell de Mallorca will take advantage of this closure to carry out other works, such as the installation of 30 hydrants for the tunnel’s fire system. Maintenance will also be performed on the traffic light located in the north section of the tunnel, the drainage and sweeping system as well as the repainting of the roadway.
The works form part of the third phase of a series of improvement measures which have included the installation of a generator that connects to a ventilation system in the case of an emergency.
