EXCLUSIVE BREAKING: Wales is issued record number of flood warnings as Storm Dennis continues to batter the UK

Storm Dennis has flooded South Wales, triggering the highest number of flood warnings and alerts on a single day on record.

There are 594 alerts currently in place, four severe warnings in England and widespread amber alerts from the Met Office. There are also two severe flooding’s in Wales, with one of its towns, Pontypridd, is currently ‘under water’.

Cardiff rescuers brought people from their homes in boats after the river Taff burst its banks.

Footage on social media from Pontypridd shows the town under water, with strong currents sweeping through peoples homes.

The storm has left roads and railway lines underwater, as it batters parts of the UK with heavy rains and strong winds.

A dispatcher for South Wales emergency services, Joanne Thomas has said: “I’m currently covering Powys/Ceredigion at the moment, and the road closures are ridiculous, I’m having to dispatch ambulances to people who require urgent medical assistance, and the roads are currently flooded, causing them to be closed off, its mayhem.”

Across 24 hours in South Wales, 105mm of rain fell, while gales of up to 91mph were recorded in the area.

Rescues are currently underway in Nantgarw near Wales capital, Cardiff as people are being evacuated from their homes.

Local resident Kevin, who’s house has been submerged with water, has said: “Everything was floating about including the settee. It rises very quickly and can go to 6ft in the matter of an hour – that’s how quick it can go, but it can drop just as fast though.”
