Mobile World Congress 2020 In Spain’s Barcelona Reluctant To Cancel Despite Wave Of Withdrawals

Spain’s MWC to be held between 24 and 27 this month in Barcelona, remains firm in its decision to maintain the most important technological event in the world despite the wave of big firms who have withdrawn due to fears of coronavirus.

Yesterday, the Japanese companies Sony and NTT DoCoMo, among others, joined the list of absenteeism which also includes Amazon.

Big Chinese brands like Huawei are expected to have a large presence at the congress and in its financing and though they have imposed measures such as not sending their executives from China and leaving the presentations in the hands of the Europeans, the imposition by the GSMA (Global System for Mobile Communications) to carry out measures such as passport control and body temperature of attendees fuels the paranoia unleashed by the virus.

The drop in registrations continues to affect the image of the congress, and it looks like the attendance at the MWC, if it is held at all, will be considerably reduced from the 109,000 attendees in the 2019 edition.
