Driver dies in horror crash in Spain after car lands in canal

A DRIVER has been killed in Spain after crashing their car into a canal.

As reported by the Mossos d’Esquadra police force, the fatal accident took place in the early hours of Tuesday morning (February 11) at kilometre 91 on the C-17 highway in Ripoll, Girona. The driver had veered off the road, landing into the canal which ran alongside the road with the vehicle being completely submerged underwater.

As the incident was called in, two patrols from the Catalan police, the Fire Brigade and an ambulance were deployed to the scene, alongside specialised members of a search and rescue unit.

Firefighters were able to retrieve the driver from the car, however, the individual was pronounced dead on arrival.

As Euro Weekly News understands, an investigation has now been launched to determine the exact circumstances behind the event. The victim’s identity has not yet been revealed.
