MORE than 50 volunteers pitched in on the first day of a campaign to clear Orihuela’s beaches of plastic and packaging.
Street Cleaning and Municipal Waste councillor Damasco Aparicio and Health council Jose Galiano were among those who took part in the clean-up effort on the Flamenca beach on Tuesday morning.
Organised by the local authority’s Environment department, the campaign aims to restore the municipal beaches to pristine condition after last month’s storm Gloria left large amounts of plastic waste strewn along the coastline.
“Before starting on the mechanical cleaning of the beach it was decided to have this kind of collection to eliminate all the plastic which was thrown out of the sea after the last storm”, Aparicio commented.
The number of people who turned out at the Flamenca beach “demonstrates the commitment of our residents to caring for the environment”, he added.
The plastic collection will finish next Tuesday February 18 on Playa de La Glea. Anyone interested in joining the volunteers in the clean-up effort should be at the beach from 10.30am onwards, where they will be provided with gloves and bags.
The plastic collected is taken to a treatment plant to be recycled.
