STORM GLORIA: Prompted cancellations. Photo credit: Benidorm town hall.
HOTEL occupancy fell to 71 per cent in Costa Blanca’s Benidorm during the second fortnight of January, hoteliers’ association Hosbec announced. This was 4.7 percentage points lower than during the same period in 2019, a descent that Hosbec president Toni Mayor admitted was worse than the sector had expected. “Almost certainly this was caused Storm Gloria during the third week of January which prompted a large number of cancellations particularly from Spanish clients,” he pointed out. Mayor also blamed the “weak showing” by Imserso, which organises subsidised winter holidays for Spanish pensioners. “The programme’s new operator still hasn’t reached optimum levels, although we are confident that February will recover some of the lost overnight stays,” the Hosbec president said.
