ALMUÑECAR Local Police officers and members of the fire service have donated a very handsome €9,250 to the Caritas charity.
Officers and firefighters raised the money from a series of sports and other events they have staged over the last few months with the support of Almuñecar council and local businesses.
In a ceremony staged last week at Almuñecar Town Hall, Local Police chief Manuel Ledesma, accompanied by Mayor Trinidad Herrera and the Sports, Maintenance and Public Safety councillors, presented parish priest Vicente Guerrero with the money raised for the charity in his capacity as Caritas parish president.
Jose Manuel Medina, who coordinated the fundraising programme, explained a group of his friends and work colleagues serving in the Local Police and fire service first agreed to get involved and do their bit to help the needy back in 2015.
The have since organised fun-sporting solidarity days, using the municipal sports pavillion and swimming pool as venues. There has also been a firefighters and police fashion parade in the Casa de la Cultura.
Vicente Guerrero gave a heartfelt thanks to the officers and firefighters, as well as to all the local residents and businesses which had taken part in the activities.
“We are sure this will alleviate the needs of many residents”, the parish priest commented.
