DESPITE Storm Gloria, a record number of more than 300 mountain bikers entered the recent Cronoescalada (Mountain Bike Time Trial).
Although this is only the Time Trial’s second edition, the race is now established on the Alicante province BTT mountain bike circuit, said Alfaz’s Sports councillor Oscar Perez. This year’s Cronoescalada included eight different, and spectacular heats, with the prizes that were later presented by Spanish cross-country mountain biker Sergio Mantecon who competed in the 2012 Olympics.
Perez afterwards thanked by Jose Alfonso Espinosa, president of Alfaz’s Club BTT for organising the time trial as well as the participants who competed over a 13-kilometre Sierra Helada circuit which, he said, “no-one was indifferent to.”
For the organisers “the jewel in the crown” was Paola Zahonero Abril, national and regional BTT champion, Espinosa said. “She is the best, not only for what she has won but because she is approachable, pleasant and passionate about this sport that is so exacting but also so rewarding.”
