MORE than 1,400 young people from all over the province have become scientists for a day at the University of Alicante this month.
Pupils at 51 secondary schools took part in the science faculty’s “Ven a hacer practicas a la Universidad” (Come and do practicals at the university) January programme.
Youngster from towns including Elche, Pilar de la Horadada, Orihuela, Rojales, Santa Pola and Torrevieja went along to the university’s San Vicente del Raspeig campus to learn about topics like how to differentiate between organisms which can inhabit plankton and the extraction of natural products.
The programme was first launched in 2011 with the aim of giving pre-university students the opportunity to discover the practical side of science through experiments and observation techniques in the laboratory. There have been practical sessions in subjects including biochemistry, biotechnology, ecology, microbiology, chemical analysis, optometry and inorganic and organic chemistry.
UA professors and PhD students volunteer to participate in the programme.
