THE influenza epidemic has arrived in Elche, emptying classrooms and causing at least 10 hospital admissions.

The disease has increased 172 per cent in the province last week and young children are the most affected although the majority of those admitted to hospital are elderly people who carry other health problems.

At the Hospital del Vinalopó, the flu rate is 77.3 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, meaning it has already entered the epidemic phase, however, the management has indicated that the situation is under control and there has been no problem in the ER or lack of beds.

In the General Hospital of Elche, doctors indicated that fewer cases of influenza were being treated than last year at this time, but emergency assistance for this disease had increased by around 10 per cent so far.

The virus is noticeable throughout the province. Schools in Alicante have already begun to empty classrooms, with the absence of up to 10 per cent of students in primary education. In the case of children in pre school education, this figure rises to 20 per cent in some schools.
