New block casts a shadow in Calpe, Costa Blanca

PLANS to replace a 1970s apartment building on La Fossa beach with a 20-storey tower block continue to meet opposition.
As well as queries regarding the project’s legality from opposition councillors, many residents are claiming that it will automatically lower the value of their own properties. The new block will obstruct their views, they complained, while one woman explained that her parents, who bought their apartment less than 15 years ago, are now trying to sell it to finance their retirement.
Despite the apartment’s nearness to the La Fossa beach and privileged views of the Peñon de Ifach, they are having difficulty in selling once buyers learn that it will be in shadow for much of the day once the new block is built. Many of her parents’ neighbours are elderly and want to sell for economic or social reasons, she claimed, while others supplementing incomes by renting out their properties will now encounter problems.
“This is going to spoil retirement for a lot of people,” she predicted.
