Latest news in brief from Axarqiuia

Almachar is fighting back against depopulation with financial support for residents. The new measure will help locals between 18 and 25 to obtain their driving license.
The Town Hall will give out €100 to all aspiring drivers, in a bid to combat the dwindling population. To do this, the Town Hall has allocated €3,000 in the municipality’s budget for 2020.
Socialist Mayor Antonio Yuste, explained that the number of inhabitants in the village was reasonably steady.
He did point out, however, that the population stood at 1,811 compared to the 2,000 inhabitants in 2000. Yuste explained that the local PSOE government hoped the new measure would encourage young people to stay in the village.
According to the mayor, being able to drive to neighbouring towns like Velez Malaga and the beach would be a big benefit for youngsters.
He added that they would be free to come and go, but always maintaining their residency in Almachar.
