THE City Council of Torrevieja will launch an innovative new campaign to curb the growing problem of dog excrement and urine across the municipality.
The Council will make 22,000 bone-shaped collection bags available for residents to pick up their pooches’ waste in addition to 2,000 reusable bottles to dissolve urine.
At a press conference to announce the campaign, Carmen Gómez, the Councillor for Urban Cleaning states that this will not only improve the image of Torrevieja but promote good habits among residents. She said:
“We have had many complaints about the issue of dog excrement on the pavements and public roads, and now residents can go out with a bag and bottle.”
The plastic bottles are a pioneering proposal for dog urine in Spain and is proven to eliminate the bad smell that is emitted. It is advisable to fill the bags with the same proportion of vinegar and water so that the cleaning is effective.
Both the bags and bottles can be picked up by any resident from Torrevieja Town Hall or the Council’s animal shelter that is located on the Vista Alegre promenade.
It is also noted that owners who do not follow the Council’s rules to pick up their dog’s waste can be fined up to €700.
