GUARDIA Civil seized contraband cigarettes with a combined market value of some €15,000 in just one day during a routine check on passengers and vehicles disembarking at Almeria port.
Officers found nearly 3,000 packs of smokes hidden in the false bottom of a car trailer and behind double covers on the roof, doors and floor of a van. Both vehicles came off the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria ferry, which regularly does the route between Almeria city and Oran in Algeria.
The Guardia said the packets were of various different brands, but all lacked the obligatory tax stamp.
