Passers by captured this video of a grandma dangling her 7-year-old grandson from a balcony to rescue her cat.

The incident is reported to have occurred in Nanchong, China. The cat lover is seen to tie her seven-year old grandson in a harness before dangling him down from the balcony of her apartment which is on the 5th floor to save her beloved cat that was stuck on the balcony of the unit below hers.

The footage then shows how the boy puts the cat in a bag before his grandmother hoists him back up to the 5th floor. Onlookers witnessing the petrifying incident can be heard screaming at the woman to stop, advice ignored by the elderly lady, who risked the life of her own grandchild to save her pet.

The foolhardy grandmother who’s only known by her surname Tang, has been widely criticized after the footage went viral first all over Chinese social media and then worldwide. A spokesperson at the local residential committee, Wang Ying, told BJ News that they had “criticized and educated” Ms. Tang. The spokesperson added that the boy was a first-grade pupil and that his parents were working in another city, leaving him to live with his grandparents.

According to Newbook, the grandmother insists that her grandchild, named Hao Hao, was not hurt and she didn’t feel she was causing her grandson any danger at the time but admits she felt scared for him after watching the footage.

Luckily, the boy was able to get the cat into the bag and they both were pulled up to safety. Hopefully, next time, the reckless grandmother will just use the stairs instead and knock on neighbour’s door in order to access the balcony if needed.

The Expat community in Spain, who are a very cat-loving community, have been shocked with the images. “It doesn’t matter how much I love my cat” Gina who lives in Torremolinos told Euro Weeky News, “It would never occur to me to put the life of my grandchild before that of my cat”

“What happened to the stairs?” Another community member has claimed, adding “Just as well the grandmother’s strength has made up for her lack of common sense.”
