Unionistas CF React to Drawing Spanish Giants Real Madrid in Copa Del Rey

Segunda B Division team Unionistas de Salamanca have been drawn to play Spanish and European Titans – Real Madrid, in the Copa Del Rey.

The Unionistas were recently founded in 2013, after the demise of Union Deportiva Salamanca. Their stadium only holds a mere 3,000 seats. This will be a drastic change for the Los Blancos side, who are comfortable playing in front of their home crowd of 81,000, at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The stadium capacity alone is an accurate indicator to the contrast of size between the two clubs. Therefore, the Unionistas reaction from the players and club members to the draw is certainly understandable. Real Madrid are arguably the largest football club in the world, so to be hosting them in the Round of 32 of the Copa Del Rey is an enormous event.

The format of the Copa Del Rey has been altered, meaning the game in Salamanca is a single elimination game – if there is going to be a shock result, Madrid will not be given the opportunity to redeem the tie in a second leg at the Bernabeu.

Real Madrid Head Coach, Zinedine Zidane, is expected to use the opportunity to weaken his starting eleven by rotating some of his players. The date of the fixture is to be held at the back end of Janaury. There is potential for history to be made.
