COSTA DEL SOL NEWS UPDATE: Police rescue attempted suicide from sea after knife attack on Swedish friend

POLICE have saved a man from suicide after he jumped in the sea following an incident when a friend of his fell from a second-floor balcony as he tried to avoid a knife attack. 

National Police say that the two Swedish men had got into an argument yesterday morning (January 11) at about 7 am. 

One of them allegedly attacked the other. In his efforts to escape the victim fell two floors from an apartment balcony in Fuengirola on Spain’s Costa del Sol. 

He suffered multiple fractures in the fall and was rushed to the Costa del Sol hospital. 
Police launched a manhunt for the alleged attacker, finding the 40-year-old suspect at 2 pm on a local beach. 

As teh Euro Weekly News reported, he was standing in the water armed with a knife. As police arrived he knelt on the shore, put a knife to his own neck and threatened to kill himself. 

Police cordoned off the area, then called in the Special Security Operation Group (GOES) and an expert negotiating agent. 
After five hours of negotiation, the National Police managed to disarm the man, taking away his large knife, reducing him and arresting him on charges of alleged attempted manslaughter. He has since been transferred to a hospital for psychiatric assessment.
