A MAN in his 30s died early this morning (January 7) and his mother was seriously injured in a fire of unknown cause in a house in the Spanish region of Murcia, the Emergency Coordination Centre has reported.
Emergency services received several calls around 4 am informing them that a two-storey house on Esparto Street in Archena had caught fire and smoke was coming out of all its windows.
Patrols of the Guardia Civil, Local Police, firefighters of the Consorcio de Extinción de Incendios y Salvamento and ambulances with medical personnel were mobilised.
Upon arrival, the firemen rescued the mother and recovered the body of the man, who had already died before their arrival.
The woman was treated at the scene by medics and then taken to the burns unit of the Virgen de la Arrixaca hospital in Murcia with very serious injuries. She may be transferred to a specialised centre in Valencia given the seriousness of the injuries.
According to the sources, an agent of the Guardia Civil had to receive medical assistance for smoke inhalation.
