Police have shut the M1 after a serious crash heading southbound.
The road is closed in both directions between junction 13 near Bedford and junction 12 near Flitwick.
Officers have urged drivers to use alternative routes if possible.
Bedfordshire Police said: “Emergency services are currently at the scene of a serious collision between J13 and J12 on the southbound carriageway of the M1.
“The road is currently closed in both directions (northbound and southbound) and motorists are advised to seek alternative routes.”
A diversion is in operation and trapped traffic is being turned around.
The motorway is expected to be closed all day as two large lorries are involved.
Photos from the scene show a lorry may have crashed through road furniture.
