They may have become keen footballing rivals in recent years (for reasons no one is quite sure about) but there is one statistic in which Elche is now beating Granada.
It has overtaken the Andalucian city to become the 19th biggest municipality in Spain, in terms of population.
The 2,000 new residents registered in the city last year helped it consolidate its position in the top 20 with a population of 232,517 compared to Granada’s 232,462.
Madrid, followed by Barcelona, Valencia, Sevilla and Zaragoza, with Malaga, Murcia, Palma de Mallorca, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Bilbao make up the first 10 spots.
Elche is the third biggest city in the Valencian Community, only surpassed by Valencia and Alicante, and with a considerable advantage over its immediate rival, Castellón, which has 171,728 inhabitants. As for the national ranking, Elche is closest in population to 18th placed A Coruña,which has a population of 245 711.
Next comes Vitoria (251 774), Hospitalet de Llobregat and Gijon, from which Elche is separated by fewer than 40,000 people.
