Spanish woman and her guide dog help hospitalised patients in Alicante

VOLUNTEER: The woman helps hospital patients in Alicante.

ONE very special blind woman and her guide dog are giving patients in Alicante the best gift: their time. Raquel Marqués Laso is a Red Cross volunteer, who, despite her disability helps hospitalised patients. Along with Stela —her Labrador guide dog— Raquel takes two buses to the San Vicente del Raspeig hospital every Monday.

There, they walk the halls and chat for five or ten minutes with those who need it most. Raquel assures that time is the most valuable thing a person can have. She believes that it is priceless to spend a few moments to make somebody’s life a bit more enjoyable.

Raquel is a trained nurse and physiotherapist but since she lost her sight, the young woman has not been able to find employment. The inspiration to volunteer and give a helping hand came from Raquel’s father, who is also a Red Cross volunteer in her homeland of Galicia.
