Costa del Sol’s Picasso Museum Exceeds 700,000 Visitors During 2019

COSTA DEL SOL’S Picasso Museum situated in the heart of Malaga is the most visited art gallery in southern Spain and all of Andalusia, exceeding 700,000 visitors during 2019.

To maintain this trend of being the most visited museum in the whole of the Costa del Sol and one of the most popular in Spain, three new exhibitions are already planned for 2020, ‘Genealogies of Art’, ‘Miquel Barceló. Metamorphosis’ and ‘Meret Oppenheim. Reflection of an era’.

As Euro Weekly News has been informed, this last year, 2019, saw a total of 703,807 visitors – four per cent more than in 2018. This progression reveals a tendency towards constant growth, while consolidating its national and international recognition and prestige.

The Malaga Picasso Museum (MPM) exhibits not only the extraordinary and prolific work of Picasso, but also offers other quality and diverse art, elements that have, together with the tourist boom that has characterised the city of Malaga for some years now, made it possible for the popularity of the museum to grow, with visitors from all over the world.

MPM also aims to promote and encourage artistic creation, research and teaching of artistic expression, conservation of cultural heritage and the study of art, as well as promote understanding and intercultural dialogue through art, contributing to social development of culture and encourage respect for cultural heritage.

For this reason, pedagogical work plays a fundamental role. Specifically, last year a total of 27,515 people took part in educational activities, including participants in the “accessibility project” being developed by the art gallery in collaboration with Obra Social “la Caixa”.

The Picasso Museum in Costa del Sol’s Malaga is where artist Pablo Ruiz Picasso was born and has 285 works donated by members of Picasso’s family.

The museum is located in the Calle San Agustín, and although Picasso moved away from Málaga at the age of 10, Picasso attended a nursery school on that street, and his father José Ruiz Picasso was curator of the city museum in the old town hall, also on that street.
