VOLKSWAGEN has developed “a visionary prototype” robot that can charge electric cars autonomously, allowing any parking space to become a charging point.
The system is comprised of two units: a robot that is summoned by drivers via a mobile app or a connected car system and an energy storage device that the robot tows to the vehicle.
The robot is capable of opening a charging port and connecting a plug then going to charge other vehicles and returning to collect the energy storage device once charging is completed.
Each ‘battery wagon’ contains 25kWh of power and is capable of DC fast-charging at up to 50kW.
