AN elderly woman is in critical condition after being hit by a car as she was crossing the road in Lleida, Spain.
As reported by the emergency services, the 79-year-old woman was struck as she was walking on a signposted crossing on Avinguda de Pinyana this afternoon (Monday, December 23).
As horrified residents called the collision in, ambulances rushed to the scene where they took the frail and seriously injured woman to the nearby Arnau University Hospital in Vilanova.
A manhunt was immediately launched by the police and thanks to witness statements, a a 52-year-old man was arrested a short time later in the Balàfia district, where his car showed substantial damage to its body.
Suspicious that the driver was intoxicated, police officers carried out a drug and alcohol test which indicated that the man was under the influence of drugs. As Euro Weekly News understands, the man has been arrested and charged with dangerous driving where he will remain in custody until an appearance in court.
