The first edition of the Solidarity Challenge will raise funds for AFA, the Marina Baja Alzheimer’s Association.
Benidorm’s Equality department, the Anemona association, and the Club Nautico are organising the Challenge, which Equality councillor Angela Zaragozi said was the first of its kind.
Anemona members will be rowing from Benidorm port to Altea port on January 18, explained Maria Botella, who is president of the Marina Baja support group for women with gynaecological cancers.
Meanwhile, Anemona has placed the boat that members will be using in the challenge in Plaza Reyes de España.
Each day between 6pm and 10pm until January 3, the public can write their names on the hull in exchange for a €5 donation for adults and €2 for children. The boat will be covered in names “from stem to stern” by the time it is removed, the Equality councillor predicted.
Jaime Mas from Benidorm’s Club Nautica announced that the yacht club intends to measure out the route between the two ports: “This could be used for future races,” he said. The Club Nautico was holding another fundraiser for AFA on December 28th, he added, with an Ergonometro rowing machine marathon.
